Joan of Arc (1412-1431) is a French saint and national heroine. In 1430, she was captured by the English as she retreated to Compiegne. A trial was held at Rouen and she was found guilty and imprisoned. This French engraving shows Joan in prison, with shackles on her arms and legs. The engraving dates to the decades after her death.
