This banner, which dates to the 16th century, is a commemorative banner, honoring the deliverance of Orleans from the English by the French forces led by Joan of Arc, known also as the Maid of Orleans. It was given to the town of Orleans by King Francis I in about 1518 and was carried in yearly processions for several decades afterward. The front side (left) shows the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus giving a ring to Charles VII as a symbol of the close alliance between church and state. At right is Joan of Arc. Behind are two patrons of the city Saint Aignan and Saint Euverte. On the reverse side of the banner is a representation of Orleans as it was in the 16th century. The firgures at right represent government officials and professors from the university. At left are members of the clergy.
