The thrones used by Christian royalty in Europe in the Middle Ages were of various shapes and sizes, and often decorated with various colors and inlaid stones and gems. The throne, second left, depicts the one used by Charles the Bald (823-877), who was king of France and ruler of the Holy Roman Empire.
