The figure represented here is King Richard the Lionhearted (1157-1199). He was king of England from 1189-1199. His mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine. Among his titles was Duke of Normandy and duke of Aquitaine. He was the principal Christian commander of the Third Crusade and fought Saladin, but never took Jerusalem. The illustration dates to 1882.
