This 1897 illustration shows the Genius of Wine and is taken from a mosaic at Pompeii. The ancients regarded the Genius as a higher power that creates and maintains life, assists at the begetting and birth of ever individual, determines the person's character, tries to influence the person's destiny for good, accompanies the person through life as a guardian spirit, and lives on in the Lares after the person's death. This motif was uncovered in Pompeii, the Roman town buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It was part of a mosaic.
