Afonso Albuquerque was a Portuguese general, a ""great conqueror"", a statesman and an empire builder. Afonso advanced the three-fold Portuguese grand scheme of combating Islam, spreading Christianity, and securing the trade of spices by establishing a Portuguese Asian empire.
