This illustration of an Eskimo is from a water-colour drawing by John White about 1585. White may have seen Eskimo with in Frobisher's or Davis's voyages. Martin Frobisher was an English seaman and privateer who made three voyages in the 1500s to the New World looking for the North-west Passage. He probably sighted Resolution Island near Labrador in north-eastern Canada, before entering Frobisher Bay and landing on present-day Baffin Island. John Davis or Davys was one of the chief English navigators of Elizabeth I. He led several voyages to discover the Northwest Passage and served as pilot and captain on both Dutch and English voyages to the East Indies. He discovered the Falkland Islands in August 1592. .
