In ancient Rome, the forum was the market and meeting place and consisted of an open square surrounded by public buildings. The best known forum is the one in Rome, pictured here in a 1900 photograph. The orientation is facing west. The three standing columns were once part of the Temple of Castor and Pollux. In front of them are the remains of the house of the Vestal Virgins. Behind is the Julian Basilica. To the right is the Sacra Via (Sacred Way) .
