The early 1900s caption reads: ""MARY OF HUNGARY RESCUED BY THE VENETIANS.—In one of the troublous ages of Hungary, its queen, Mary, was seized by some of her rebellious subjects and imprisoned. Her mother was slain before her eyes, and she herself was only finally rescued by the Venetians under their captain, John Barberigo, who stormed the castle in which she lay. Our artist has chosen the moment when the heroic knight, panting with his exertions, has just burst down the door of the cell, from which issues the captive queen, pale and wan, with dangling chains."" .
