The early 1900s caption reads: ""THE LAST STAND OF THE GAULS—CORREUS.—Correus, chief of the Bellovaci, was the last Gaul to fight the conquering Romans. When his tribe was finally put to flight, he remained alone upon the battlefield, dealing death right and left, aided and guarded by his savage fighting dogs, until at last the Romans drew off and overwhelmed him with arrows and javelins. The picture is partly symbolic, as beyond the stern, despairing figure of Correus we see the shadowy approach of the pale and feeble yet irresistible Omar."".
