This illustration shows English king Richard III (1483-1485). He was the brother of Edward IV. After gaining control of his nephew, Edward V, he had himself named king. Edward was murdered in the Tower in 1483. Rebellion followed, bringing Earl of Richmond to England in 1485. Richard killed at Bosworth Field. His death, the last Yorkist king, ended the Wars of the Roses. Richard was subject of Shakespeare's Richard III. The illustration dates to 1882.
