The figures represented here are an elector and Martin Luther. Both are Germans dating to the 1500s. Martin Luther (1483-1746) was leader of the Protestant Reformation. The title ""elector"" was the title given a German prince entitled to take part in the election of the Holy Roman Emperor. The illustration dates to 1882.
