The figure represented here is Francis I, who died in 1547. Francis I was the first king of France from the Angouleme branch of the House of Valois. He was key to initiating the French Renaissance. Also under his rule, the expansion of first French colonial Empire. He ruled 1515 to his death in 1547. His wife was Queen Claudia. This illustration dates to 1882.
