Philip II of Spain (1527-1598)—pictured second from right—continued his father's war against France and at the Treaty of Cateau- Cambresis made Spain the chief power of Europe. The destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1588 made British seapower supreme. In this 1882 illustration, he is pictured with his first wife, Mary of Portugal. To their left are a Knight of the Order of St. James and the Duke of Alva in full armor. The duke served as the Spanish governor of the Netherlands under Philip II.
