Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was the lord protector of England. A prominent Puritan in the English Parliament, he proposed army reoganization in 1644 during the struggle between a largely Presbyterian Parliament and Puritan army. He led an expedition to Ireland in 1649 where he continued the poilicy of settling the English. Opinions of him and his leadership vary greatly.
