Christopher Columbus sought economic support for an expedition west across the Atlantic Ocean to the rich lands of the East, including India. After the courts of Italy and Portugal refused to sponsor him, he met with success at the Spanish court of Ferdinand and Isabella. and sailed in 1492. This illustration, dating to 1896, shows Columbus and his crew landing on the island that he called Hispaniola (present-day Dominican Republic and Haiti) and claiming it for Spain.
