The USS Cruiser Columbia was launched in July 1892 and in 1894 put under the command of Captain G.W. Summer. At the time, at 412 feet in length, it was the longest vessel in the US Navy. It was built as a commerce raider and saw little action in the Spanish American War (1898), spending time conveying troops to Puerto Rico in July and August of 1898. In World War I, it became the flagship of Squadron 2, Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet. A three-masted schooner with many guns, it also had four torpedo tubes. It was finally decommissioned in June 1921.
