John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English evangelical preacher and founder of Methodism. In 1735, he and his brother Charles accompanied James Oglethorpe to Georgia. He is said to have preached some 40,000 sermons. Around 1740, he repudiated Calvinism, causing a breaking between himself and George Whitefield.
