Robert Cavalier, sieur de La Salle, (1643-1687) was a French explorer in North America. He commanded Fort Frontenac and descended the Mississippi to its mouth in 1682. He was murdered by his own men (pictured here in this late 1800s engraving) in an unsuccessful attempt to reach the mouth of the Mississipi by sea. .
