James Abram Garfield (1831-1881) was elected the 20th President of the United States in 1880. He was constantly harassed by people seeking jobs and was shot by one on July 2, 1881. He died on September 19. In this 1890s engraving, he is shown lying in state in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
