This engraving is a late 1800s interpretation of a Viking leader. The Vikings were an ancient people whose homeland was Scandinavia. Their raids and activity along the coasts of Europe and the British Isles, and also east into Russia (where they became known as Varangians), gave the period from the 8th to the 10th centuries A.D. the name of the Viking Age. The Vikings in the West were also known as Norsemen and Danes.
