Hernando Cortes, also spelled Hernando Cortez, (1485-1547) was a Spanish conquistador. He marched on the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan and was received by the aztec leader Montezuma as a descendant of the god Quetzalcoatl. In 1521, he took control of Tenochtitlan, thereby destroying the Aztec Empire. .
