Hernando De Soto (c. 1500-1542) was a Spanish conquistador. He explored the southeastern United States (present-day Florida to Tennessee to Oklahoma) searching unsuccessfully for treasure. He and his men most likely were the first white men to see the Mississippi River, and he is buried in its waters.
