Sir walter Raleigh ( 1552? - 1618) was an English statesman and favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. He organized the colonizing expedition to America that was established at Roanoke Island—failed. Under James I, he was executed for treason. he was also a man of letters and wrote poetry and political and philosophical works.
