Skeleton with phrenological skull, Europe, 1801-1900. In the 1800s, phrenology became popular among a large number of people. Phrenologists believed that the shape and size of the different brain regions determined personality. There was also disagreement among phrenologists, as this skull shows. One half of the head shows the system of Franz Joseph Gall (1758 -1828), a German physician and founder of phrenology, the other half shows the system of his colleague Johann Gaspar Spurzheim (1776-1832), Historical, digitally restored reproduction from a 19th century original.
