Springfield, Massachusetts July 8, 1918 A riot in broke out during July 4th parade as several men refused to bare their heads when the United States flag passed by and a a general riot and free for-all fight ensued as they were roughly handled by an irate crowd and taken into the custody of the police. The men ducking in the policeman's grasp at the left of the picture is alleged to have started the farces when he was asked by a Spanish war veteran (seen at the right) why he did not doff his hat. In the center may be seen a tie-pulling contest.
