New York, New York November 17, 1945 Betty Lou Oliver after spending 16 weeks in Bellevue Hospital recovering from injuries suffered when an Army B-25 bomber on the way to Newark Airport got lost in the fog and hit the Empire State Building between the 78th and 80th floors, setting them on fire. Betty Lou was an elevator operator on the 80th floor and suffered severe burns and when rescue workers put her on another elevator to get her to the ground floor, the cables snapped and the elevator with Betty Lou plunged 1000 feet, ending up in the basement where rescuers found her with a broken pelvis, back and neck.
