This illustration, which highlights the marketplace at Spalato, dates to 1913. Spalato is perhaps better known as Split, is a city in Croatia, and the chief center of the region known as Dalmatia. It was founded by Dionysius, tyrant of Syracuse in 395 B.C. The Roman emperor Diocletian built a palace there around A.D. 300.
