Hugh Capet Crowned

Légende

Hugh Capet was crowned as king of France at Rheims Cathedral in A.D. 987. The French Carolingian line had ended with the death of Louis V. When his heir and uncle, Charles of Lorraine, a vassal of the German emperor, failed to secure the throne, it passed to Hugh Capet, the son of Hugo of Francis. Archbishop Adalbert performed the coronation ceremony (pictured here) at Rheims on July 3, 987.
