General Lee Before the Battle of Gettysburg
Légende
Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was the general in chief of the Confederate armies during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). He was the military advisor to Jefferson Davis. This illustration, dating to 1898, shows Lee on the eve before the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), a battle many call the turning point in the war as it stopped Lee's advances north. Heading the Union troops was Major General Meade. Gettysburg is in Pennsylvania.
