Hillestad Wood Portals
Légende
These two wood portals, carved with scenes from the Volsung Saga, are from a church at Hillestad, Norway. The Volsung Saga is an Icelandic prose saga that was probably assembled in the 12th or 13th century. Its heroine, Gudrun, brings about the ruin of the Volsungs, who are led by Sigurd. Sigurd is shown with his thumb in his mouth at the bottom of the left portal.
