This facsimile shows the front page of the issue of 'Truth' that included the Morey Letter, Garfield's political death warrant. The date is New York, Saturday, October 20, 1880. The letter was supposedly by the Republican presidential candidate James A. Garfield. Its intent was to suggest that Garfield favored Chinese immigration to the United States. It later was declared a forgery and said to have been written by Democrats. The result was a backlash against Democrats.
