Latin Rudder
Légende
This drawing illustrates the mosaic known as the Navicella by the renowned Italian artist of Giotto (1266-1337). The mosaic is now a lunette above the central opening to the portico at t. Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican. It was originally in the Old St. Peter's in Rome. It shows St.Peter walking on the Sea of Galilee At far right is Jesus Christ walking on the Sea of Galilee. Below Christ is the onor of the mosaic, cardinal stefaneschi, who gave the mosaic in 1266. The mosaic was placed here under Pope Paul V. The illustration also is a good example of the use, in a boat, of the double or Latin rudder.
