This engraving was copied from an illustration from Johan Nieuhof's 'Gedenkwaerdige Zee en Lantreize' (Contemporary Sea and Landscapes), which was published in 1682 in Amsterdam. It shows a fish market in Batavia, present-day Jakarta or Djarta in Indonesia. In the foreground are several flat-bottomed fishing vessels and baskets in the water. Several men have climbed ladders leading to the roof.
