Boring for Petroleum
Légende
This illustration, which dates to 1876, shows the process of boring for petroleum at the time. Following the succesful boring for oil in Titusviulle, Pennsylvania in 1859, people became wild with excitement about finding oil and the sinking of many wells followed. Atr first, vast quantities of oil flowed into the creek and were wated, before suitable tanks could be prepared to receive it. After a while, the flowing wells were fitted with strong tubing and stop-cocks, by means of which the supply was entirely controlled.
