The caption for this early 1900s illustration reads: Death of Nero Nero, the worst of all tyrants who tortured Rome, died by his own hand. He had slain so many of his subjects, that at last there was a sudden conspiracy, and he was driven from the throne. He fled like a frightened rat, and hid in a slave’s cellar. Soldiers hunted him down; he begged to be allowed to live, no matter how. He had found delicious pleasure in the murder of others, but it was not until he was warned that his late subjects were planning to torture him to death, that he managed to screw up enough courage to die, himself. He placed a dagger to his throat, one of his slaves drove it home, and he was dying when the mob burst in on him. The year was 68 A.D.
