The early 1900s caption reads: 'BLAKE'S NAVAL VICTORY OVER VAN TROMP, 1653.—During Cromwell's time, the Dutch and English had their epic struggle for the mastery of the seas. The Hollanders defeated the famous English admiral Blake, and it is said that Van Tromp hoisted a broom to the masthead as a sign that he had swept the English from the seas. But Blake had his revenge by defeating Van Tromp's fleet off Portsmouth, and soon after the English completely over-whelmed their ancient rivals.' Both sides claimed victory in the Battle of Scheveningen.
