Peter I Founding St. Petersburg
Légende
Peter I, better known as Peter the Great, was born in 1672 and died in 1725. He is credited as the founder of the modern Russian state. In 1703, he ordered his new capital city built - it was to be a 'window looking on Europe.' Named St. Petersburg, it was built on the newly conquered delta through which the Neva River enters the Gulf of Finland. This illustration, dating to about 1900, shows Peter over seeing the construction.
