BATTLE OF DANTZIG—DEATH OF PLEL0.—The siege of Dantzig (1733) was the first struggle between widely separated France and Russia. Each country had a candidate for the throne of Poland, and Dantzig, then a Polish seaport, became the centre of their struggle. The French were hopelessly outnumbered, but their ambassador Plelo persisted, with blind gallantry, in fighting until he fell. The French then withdrew, and the little war terminated in Russia's favor.
