For the ancient Greeks, the Parthenon served as a temple to the goddess Athena. Completed in 432 B.C., it stood on the Acropolis in Athens. Within, at the west end of the nave, stood a 40-foot high statue of Athena Parthenos (Parthenos means 'maiden'), sculpted by the renowned master Phidias. The statue was a framework of wood covered in ivory and gold. Athena held in her right hand a statue of the goddess Nike (Victory).
