On May 9, 1860, representatives of the new Democratic political organization, the National Constitutional Union Party, assembled in the First Presbyterian Meeting House (known as the Two-steeple Church) on Fayette Street in Baltimore. Washington Hunt, former governor of New York, was elected the president.
