Légende
The USS Carondelet (built in 1861) was a City class ironclad gunboat that James Eads built for the Union Navy to use in the U.S. Civil War against the Confederates. On the night of April 4, 1862, it was commanded by Henry Walke (pictured here) and led the Federal gunboats down the Mississippi by the Confederate garrison of the battery on Island No. 10 in New Madrid, Missouri, to support General Pope's crossing of the river, opening up the river to Union troops. This photograph of Walke dates to around 1862.
