The Imperial Prince of Germany, Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl von Preuben (1831-1888), the future Frederick III of Germany, shortly after his arrival in Rome, notified Cardinal Jacobini, Secretary of State of Pope Leo XIII, through the Germanic minister accredited to the Holy See, von Schloezer, of his wish to visit and pay his respects to the Head of the Catholic Church. The visit took place on the afternoon of 18 December 1883, after having met with the Kings of Italy in the Quirinal Palace. Arrival of the Prince at the Vatican Cortile. The Master of the Chamber of the Papal Court, Luigi Macchi (1832-1907), comes out to meet the Prince. The Swiss Guards, in full dress uniform, presenting arms.
