Mahdist War (1881-1899). It faced the followers of Sudanese religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Fahal, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, against Egyptian Khedivate troops, who were later joined by British forces. First Battle of El Teb (4 February 1884). Valentine Baker, commanding the military contingent that was coming to Tokar's aid, was defeated by an attack near El Bed during the march. The Egyptian soldiers, who were part of this contingent, were not used to marching in formation, moving forward en masse without any kind of discipline. When they reached near El Teb, they were attacked by Mahdi troops led by Osman Digna. Despite being superior in number and weapons, the troops panicked and fled.
