Peninsular War (1808-1814). In January 1814, the French garrisons in the towns of Lerida, Mequinenza and Monzon were evacuated. This was a plot hatched by Generals Juan Van Halen and Baron d'Eroles (Joaquin Ibanez Cuevas y de Valonga, 1785-1825), among others, who forged documents ordering the French to leave these places, feigning an agreement between Suchet and the Spanish generals. They would be allowed to return to France. The French were finally captured at Martorell. A large part of the captured troops were moved to Saragossa by order of the Regency. Baron de Eroles takes the French prisoner at Martorell (province of Barcelona, Catalonia). ""Glorias Espanolas"" (Glories of Spain). Volume IV. Published in Barcelona, 1890.
