The army of the French Republic led by Napoleon Bonaparte attacked the Austrian Habsburg forces under Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen. The Austrian army fought a rearguard action against the French vanguard led by Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte at the Tagliamento river crossing, but was defeated and withdrew to the northeast.
