This illustration from a 1901 book shows two men mining for gold in the 1880s. They are using the shaft mining technique. Their tools are a bucket, a windlass (this tool with a rope wrapped around a drum helps lift buckets of dirt up the shaft from the mine), a cradle (to separate gold from dirt, clay, and rock/gravel), and a pick. Here the miner at the bottom of the shaft is using a pick to loosen the sides of the area. The bucket is in the shaft and the miner at top is pulling it up the shaft.
