Cyrus McCormick of Virginia was the founder of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. McCormick built on the reaper designs of his father and is credited as the inventor of the mechanical reaper. His machine—the first one pictured here—was pulled by horses and cut the grain to one side. One of the first public showings of his reaper was in 1831, but he was granted a patent for his machine in 1834.
