First Train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway - 1825 drawn by Stevenson’s ‘No. 1’. The world's first public railway to use steam locomotives, its first line connected collieries (a coal mine and the buildings and equipment associated with it) near Shildon with Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, and was officially opened on 27 September 1825. Locomotion No. 1 hauled the first train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and became the first locomotive to run on a public railway.Locomotion No 1, which was originally named 'Active,' was an early British steam locomotive train. It was built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1825 for the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
