This illustration of a Chinese soldier, holding and aiming his gun, dates to 1900. The time period in China is the Boxer Rebellion, which was an uprising against foreigners in the country. The Chinese were fighting against British, Americans, Jpanerse and several other countries. Note his queue—traditional hairstyle at the time. It had been imposed on adult Chinese men in the 1600s during the Qing dynasty. The penalty for not doing so was death, as such an infraction of the rules was considered treason. After the fall of the Qing in the 1912, the rule did not apply. The tradition was to shave the temple and forehead every 10 days or so and keep the rest braided.
